We stumbled down hillsides blanketed with ancient rainforest, dug our toes into the soft sand on coconut palm shaded beaches, strolled through the pristine waters, the ocean lapping at our calves and knew we had found our next retreat.

The island of Koh Kood is located 350 km southeast of Bangkok, Thailand and 80 km off the Thai mainland. Easily accessible from the hub that is Bangkok, it feels like a land before time. The fourth largest island in the country, it remains remarkably undeveloped. Untouched slopes, wild interiors and immaculate beaches compose its raw glamour. The isle's charms inspired the rustic-chic design of the resort, sustainably crafted with recycled wood like the poles that bring to mind the stilts of the local fishing villages.

We believe the greatest experiences are those shared with the ones you love. We've created Villa 29 to set the stage for these fantastic shared experiences. Perched in the dense tree cover of the hills, this 4-bedroom luxury villa is a perfect getaway for families; though a group of friends or even a duo of families travelling together may find it just their cup of (sustainably produced) tea.

The villa's rustic-chic escape stretches generously across the island’s tropical hillside in an endless sprawl of pavilions, decks, day beds and sun loungers. Children will find their new favourite hideaway in the tree house and delight in the surge of riding the snaking slide into the infinite lake of the freeform swimming pool. We knew our finest "castle in the sand" deserved to be sculpted on Soneva Kiri's most desirable beachside real estate. Secluded away in an exceptionally private and peaceful spot, our Private Beach Pool Reserve towers over the sea, is embraced by jungle, enjoys a serene atmosphere away from the buzz of the resort, but is only a short 5-minute electric buggy ride away from all the rustic-luxe facilities at your command.

The master bedroom and three additional bedrooms all feature luxury outdoor bathrooms so you can soak in the starlight or shower by the sun's rays with a refreshing waterfall. The fifth bedroom is the most playful of them all – a tree house with child-cheering bunk beds and a slide snaking its way down to the sprawling freeform swimming pool, a veritable sea in itself.

If the Private Beach Pool Reserve is a palace and your body is a temple, then you are welcome to exercise your devotion in its personal gym overlooking the blue or the private spa deck, perfect for meditative and healing treatments.

For our three "reserves" at Soneva Kiri Resort, we reserved the most prime locations in their respective habitats. Our Bayview Pool Reserve floats over the most spectacular hillside stretch.

Particularly private and protected, this luxuriously imaginative playground shelters you atop the jungle slopes. Wake up in the sea-facing master bedroom or perhaps even the whimsically inspired tree house. We created it for children, but many adults can't resist its allure – even if only for a night or ride down the waterslide to the pool. Why should excitement and wonder be limited to the youth?

Of course, no wonder was spared in the adult-directed indulgences. Bathe and shower by starlight in private garden bathrooms, a contained rainforest for sensuality and serenity. Allow us to stock your personal cellar with your favourite wines, then cork-pop at your will over the course of feasts around your outdoor dining table. Cushioned day beds and sun loungers create an infinite choice of places to lounge on terraces, decks and the curves of your vast freeform swimming pool amidst the forest peaks.

Gazing at the sea from atop the jungle-covered cliffs, this spot called out to us for a particularly magical reserve. Hidden in the privacy of the trees, you can snuggle in the sea-facing luxury master bedroom or bathe and shower by starlight in open-air bathrooms tucked throughout.

Find your own personal favourite spot in this sustainable escape that stretches seemingly endlessly over the hilltop. The tree house is a dream for children, their own realm in the jungle canopy. Perched atop rocky cliffs and sheltered amidst verdant tree canopy, the Dining Room entreats you to share in these lavishly simple moments. Its rustic-chic design serves as a natural complement to the beauty of the views. At breakfast, bask in a leisurely ambience as you peruse an array of enticing starts to your day. From the dedicated ham and cheese room, featuring sumptuous homemade cheeses, charcuterie and own-smoked salmon, to a wealth of other global flavours including a menu of creative Thai and Mediterranean fare from the Cooking Hut. Take your pick of more luscious delicacies straight from the wood-fired rock oven, hot and cold smoke oven and the earthen tandoor.

Treepod Dining

The free spirited nature of childhood was our inspiration for the Treepod. That desire to climb high up into a leafy canopy and find shelter amidst a simple wooden construction where imagination soared and dreams were born.

Our unique Treepod Dining experience invites you to take fine dining to new heights. Comfortably seated in a bamboo pod, we gently hoist you high up into the tropical foliage of Koh Kood’s ancient rainforest. Gaze out across the boulder-covered shoreline dancing with gentle waves, as you savour gourmet delights and your chosen wines, delivered via the zip-line acrobatics of your personal waiter.

The View

As we designed the naturally luxurious playground that is Soneva Kiri, we took great delight in casting our (light) footprint upon the spots that spoke to us, the places we wanted to share with those who we were lucky enough to host for a stay in our paradise. The spectacular vistas we discovered on our hikes and explorations were of course some of the natural features we were most impassioned to share, and The View takes its name from its unparalleled outlook.

Intimate yet dramatic, The View thrusts you into the infinite horizon. Dine cantilevered over the cliff and savour your selection of creations made in the slow food tradition – lovingly prepared with locally sourced produce and Western cooking techniques, making the most of the season and each day's harvest.

Benz's

The finest cuisine is prepared with heart and soul. Each bite tells a story – a connection to the land, to personal memories, to emotion and history. Sense this connection in the exquisite flavours and aromas of Benz's.

The creation of this signature Thai gourmet restaurant allowed us to exhibit one of our greatest finds. Discovered by Sonu and Eva, many moons ago in Phang-Nga, chef Khun Benz was our only choice when it came to finding a talented culinary artist to helm this open Thai kitchen, using ingredients grown here on Koh Kood and neighbouring Koh Chang.

Embark on a journey: cruise through the mangroves of Klong Yai Kee to this open-air lantern-lit eatery on stilts. Continue your soulful trip, discovering the delicacies of a nightly changing nine-course menu.

The Beach

As our "no shoes" mantra intimates, we revel in the sensation of soft sand between the toes... its carefree impression on the spirit, the way it sets your being at ease, the sense of connection to the elements it brings in a subtle, subconscious communiqu?. The Beach therefore is our celebration of this island ease.

Jump aboard a personal electric buggy and be whisked on the short trip to The Beach. Settle into rustic wooden chairs set directly on the sand or lounge on king-sized swinging day beds, rocking you gently with a light ocean breeze. Experience the Thai culture of our island home as our hosts escort you to Ao Salad village on the northeastern coast. One of the oldest settlements on the island, this Thai fishing village built on stilts offers glimpses of life as it is lived day to day throughout our home. Meet fishermen unloading the day's catch from colourful boats. Stroll through the trees of a rubber plantation. Visit a local school where your children can enjoy a fun cultural exchange with Thai students their own age, or taste honey straight from the comb with a beekeeper on Koh Mai Si.

Family

The Den is our pride and joy. When we envisioned Soneva Kiri, we knew wanted to do something special for children. Incredibly special. If we wanted to rekindle a childlike wonder in adults, then we had to go profusely over the edge in our children's offering. A giant moulded bamboo playground shaped like a manta ray, The Den is dedicated to learning, to excitement, to meaningful experiences. Professional child minders pique your children's imaginations, teaching them to play Thai instruments, unleashing their creative talents with painting and the visual arts, and carefully watching them at play in the wonderous world of moulded bamboo spaces up, down and around.

Recently launching the Intrepid Explorers Club, aimed specifically at one to five year olds, we are the only resort that offer such comprehensive, age-specific facilities.

At the Explorers Club, the younger group play in the 'Eco Den’. Here the children get to play with toys and take part in activities, both meeting Soneva’s stringent standards of social and environmental responsibility. Throughout the children are looked after by qualified childcare experts, supported by local child carers.

Beyond the manta, the inrepid explorer's club, child-friendly excursions and cultural exchanges immerse them in the destination. Rainforest walks and local school visits leave lasting impressions. Snorkelling

In life there is often an ecstatic joy in things just below the surface – the emotions unspoken, palpable tension, exquisite anticipation. As we stare out at the ocean – a frequent pastime in our seaside lifestyle – we see an unbroken expanse but know that just beyond eyesight a profusion of wonders reign.

We invite you to break through and surround yourself in the bursts of colours that explode throughout the reefs. Our trusted experts – including the exclusive option of our marine biologist – sail you to the most amazing snorkelling destinations in our corner of the Gulf. In hot spots like Koh Kyak, Koh Thong Lang and Koh Rang, you'll seek out rock formations teeming with wildlife and coral gardens that look as if they were designed by abstract artists of unmatched imagination. Swim amidst swirling hues a world away from the vision seen from just above.

Diving

Koh Chang National Park offers two-dozen dive sites down to 30 metres though much of the more colourful coral thrives closer to the surface, around 12 metres.

Experienced dive masters lead the way underwater to blue spotted sting rays, angelfish, fusiliers, sweet lips, moral eels, turtles and schools of banner of fish.
